Troubled Bridge Over Waters

What’s new: The southern city of Guangzhou, capital of affluent Guangdong province, was forced to close one of its major bridges, Humen bridge, after the structure started swaying on Tuesday.

The bridge, which connects the city’s Nansha district with the adjacent city of Dongguan, began moving after encountering a form of whirlwind that occurs from time to time.

Background: Opened to traffic in 1997, Humen bridge is a suspension bridge that sees around 18,400 vehicle crossings on an average day.

The swaying produced dramatic video, including one carried in English-language publication Sixth Tone, that can be viewed by clicking here.
