Tropical Storm Wanda could affect Ireland as weather expert keeps close eye

One of Ireland's leading weather experts is keeping track of a potential tropical storm as it makes it's way across the Atlantic Ocean.

Storm Wanda is currently situated just west off the Portuguese coast, and gusts of 50 mph have been recorded as the tropical storm continues to build, with a risk that it could strengthen later in the week.

However, Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather has said the current risk to Ireland is low.

He tweeted: "A fish called #Wanda is uncertain where it will go but risk to Ireland at present is low.

"The system is causing sole uncertainty on weather models for next week though."

The National Hurricane Centre in the US reclassified Wanda from a subtropical storm to a tropical storm on Tuesday as it built up.

Meanwhile, parts of Ireland will see near-freezing temperatures in the next couple of days as winter starts to kick in across the country.

According to Met Eireann forecasters, today will bring light drizzle with highest temperatures of around 10 degrees.

Tonight will be far more milder than the last few nights with lowest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees.

Saturday will be increasingly windy with a band of rain extending across the region during the afternoon. Mild too with highs of 12 to 14 degrees.

Saturday night will be mainly dry with a fair amount of cloud and some patchy mist or drizzle.

Sunday will be mainly dry with a mix of cloud and some sunny spells and just the chance of a stray coastal shower. Turning a little fresher again too with highs of 10 to 12 degrees in mostly moderate northwesterly winds, stronger for a time in the north and east.
