Tropical storm set to hit Tokyo on Tuesday causing Olympic events to be rescheduled

Tokyo is preparing itself for a tropical storm on Tuesday as organisers jumped to reschedule events and minimise disruption.

Originally a typhoon had been forecast, however that has since been downgraded.

Tropical Storm Nepartak is expected to impact a wide area but should largely make landfall further north and east of Tokyo itself across Honshu.

Masa Takaya, a spokesperson for Tokyo 2020 said that people "shouldn't be too worried" but stressed the need to "maintain precautions".

Rowing and archery events had already been moved to later on in the week as a safety measure, but there are no further plans to otherwise disrupt the schedule.

Typhoon expert Robert Speta said that while the areas of Chiba and Ibaraki could face up to 60 kilometres per hour gusts, Tokyo will likely miss the worst of these conditions.

While typhoons regularly hit Tokyo later in the year, Speta said that for even a tropical storm to make landfall on the city as this time is "very uncommon".

Olympic organisers are said to be closely following the track of the storm.

Team GB enjoyed a hugely successful Monday at the Games, picking up three gold medals as Adam Peaty retained his 100m breaststroke title before Tom Daley and his diving partner Matty Lee picked up gold in the 10m synchronised event.

Tom Pidcock completed the big day by romping home in the mountain biking.

These successes added to the silver medals earned by Alex Yee in the men's triathlon and Lauren Williams in the 67kg women's taekwondo.

Elsewhere, Team GB's men's rugby sevens team progressed to the quarter finals after comfortable victories over Canada and Japan, while the women's hockey team rescued their gold medal defence by beating South Africa 4-1.
