Tropical Liverpool in pictures after three-day heatwave sweeps the city

The shorts were out, the ice-cream vans were on every corner and the blue skies and golden sun transformed Formby Beach into something out of the Sahara.

Scousers basked this week in a heatwave that has swept across Europe - in some cases proving deadly .

But in Liverpool, the sunshine brought a welcome change from recent downpours, and the city was ready to celebrate in style.

Pier Head and the waterfront was crammed with revellers, while others trouped to Sefton Park to eat their tea al fresco on a picnic rug.

The clear skies also gifted night owls with some stunning sunsets, with crowds gathering to watch the red globe of the sun vanish over Birkenhead.

And even pets appeared to feel the heat, with dogs pictured panting out of car windows and sporting sunglasses.

But by Saturday afternoon, clouds had appeared, and an evening downpour ended the sunny spell - for now.
