Tropical disturbance expected to make landfall in Mexico on Tuesday, hurricane center says

A broad low-pressure area in the western Gulf of Mexico is expected to move inland over Mexico by Tuesday night.

When it does, it could be the second named cyclone of the hurricane season.

Although disorganized, the tropical disturbance has a 40% chance of formation in the next 48 hours, National Hurricane Center meteorologists said in their 8 a.m. advisory.

"This system could briefly become a tropical depression before moving inland over northeastern Mexico later today or tonight," meteorologists said.

The disturbance is expected to drop heavy rainfall over Mexico, southeastern Texas and Louisiana this week.

An Air Force Reserve aircraft is set to assess the disturbance Tuesday, if necessary.
