Troops use Fortnite-style VR computer game to prepare for battlefield combat

Troops are to get combat-ready using virtual reality training based on the popular computer game Fortnite.

A state-of-the-art simulator, relying on the same software, is being trialled by British squaddies.

The interactive approach allows 30 soldiers to take part at the same time in virtual battlefield combat.

Headset-wearing soldiers can hold replica guns as well as crouch and crawl.

The simulator, named Saf-Tac, uses the Unreal Engine 4, the software utilised by Fortnite.

Gaming bosses claim it will make combat training more “realistic, intuitive and immersive” before troops enter the battlefield.

Software company SimCentric was awarded £300,000 from the Government after successful initial tests with the Parachute Regiment at the Infantry Training Centre Catterick in North Yorkshire.

Tom Constable, a director of the company and former Army officer, said: “I’m proud to help train the Armed Forces of the future.

“I joined the British Army in 2006 and served in Afghanistan.

“This gave me a passion for building technology that will reduce the risk to our forces and improve the quality of training, with the aim of saving lives.”

Forces chiefs say the simulator, which features high-definition surround sound and ultra-realistic graphics, can mimic real-life training exercises.

Tests will be rolled out with the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Marines this year.

Ministry of Defence science adviser Professor Dame Angela McLean said: “The MOD is committed to developing innovative ways to combat the challenges our Armed Forces face.

“This new simulator is one way we are bringing training into the next generation.”

Around 78 million people play Fortnite every month globally.
