Troon and Prestwick tennis aces serve up talk to pupils

Doonfoot Primary School in Abbots Way, in Ayr, rolled out the red carpet to two very special athletes indeed last week.

Staff and pupils welcomed tennis stars Jack Dickson and Frances Smiley who were both stars for Britain during the recent Special Olympics.

The high profile event took place in March, in Abu Dhabi, and Jack, from Troon, won gold in the men’s singles.

And training partner Frances Smiley, from Prestwick, claimed silver in the women’s event.

Jack, 21, also grabbed a bronze in the men’s doubles.

Since their heroics, the duo, who train together at Prestwick, have been hailed for putting South Ayrshire on the world map.

But last week they gave up some of their valuable time to visit the school, chat to staff and show off their medals to pupils.

Jack and Frances also spoke about their experiences at the Games and helped give the pupils encouragement to ‘dream big’ and continue to work hard in their academic studies.
