TRNSMT boss Geoff Ellis urges Scottish Government to back test events to re-start gigs

Festival boss Geoff Ellis has urged the Scottish Government to get behind test events to get gig-goers back into venues.

Ellis, who runs Glasgow festival TRNSMT and is the former T in the Park chief, is heading to Liverpool tonight to watch band The Blossoms play a gig in front of 5000 people.

He told the Sunday Mail the Scottish Government had been wrong not to back holding experimental concerts in the coming weeks here.

This weekend clubbers in Liverpool have returned to the dance floor for the first time since the pandemic began. More than 6000 partygoers don’t need to socially distance or wear face coverings during the gigs, but they’ll need a negative Covid test result before being allowed in.

Geoff Ellis, the CEO of DF Concerts, said: “This is a huge step forward for live entertainment.

“It’s like 2019 again. We’ve got to see the results but all the signs so far are good.

“What surprises me is the Scottish Government just isn’t interested in doing the same.

“While that penny hasn’t dropped in Scotland, I’m confident it will soon.

“It was a mistake not to hold similar events here to see how we can do it.

“But I’m very optimistic about TRNSMT going ahead in September.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Government said: “As we have previously said, we all want to get back to normal as soon as it is safely possible but we must move very carefully to ensure continued suppression of the virus.”
