TRNSMT 2022: The Strokes fans hit back at Glasgow crowd as Julian Casablancas praises Barrowlands

The Strokes took to the main stage at TRNSMT on Saturday night (July 9) with their first gig in Scotland in 11 years to the day.

Fans flocked to Glasgow Green to see the American indie band following sets from Foals, The Snuts, The Fontaines DC and Wet Leg who replaced Years and Years. Example also performed on the main stage in the afternoon, praising the Glasgow crowd.

At 9.20pm, The Strokes took to the stage and the lead singer declared he missed the Barrowland Ballroom to the TRNSMT crowd.

Frontman Julian Casablancas said: “I haven’t been to Glasgow in a long time. I don’t recognise the place.”

He then added: “The Barrowlands where we used to play, I miss that place. I miss being pulled to shreds by the Glasgow crowd. It’s a fun place.

“My memories of Glasgow... always the most chaotic, violent shows of my life. This is a nice change of pace though. Next time, the Barrowlands."

But while The Strokes played some their classic anthems including Last Night, it appeared not everyone was a fan with some taking to social media, agreeing with Julian, that maybe The Strokes should go to the Barrowlands next.

One festival-goer took to Twitter to call out the crowd: "Dunno why I was expecting anything different but that TRNSMT crowd for The Strokes was proper sh***."

A second agreed: "I think it's always a problem with outdoor gigs with multiple acts. TRNSMT feels quite young as well. Perhaps it was just a minority that liked The Strokes. Maybe a Barrowlands' worth."

"It was almost like The Strokes would rather have been anywhere else but the main stage at TRNSMT", a third added.

"I saw some of The Strokes' first gigs in the UK. I was there the first year they played Reading and had to be moved to the main stage and then showed just why they were a great band. What they've shown of them from TRNSMT is embarrassing", one commented on the performance.

While another fan added: "What a fantastic day. It was amazing to see The Strokes live. These are the nights you live for."

"Great gigs yesterday at TRNSMT festival and beautiful weather in Glasgow! The Strokes were amazing. Foals too", one TRNSMT fan tweeted.
