David Robertson, the chief conductor and artistic director of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, unveils his production of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, the first Sydney performance of the masterpiece in more than 20 years.
Wagner’s opera spoke of a love so intense the physical world could not contain it, and Bernstein named the opera the central work of all music history. It set a benchmark from which conductors have since explored the nature of love, sex, life and death.
For the 2015 show, Canada’s Lance Ryan plays Tristan, and America’s Christine Brewer is Isolde, and the opera is sung in German with English surtitles.
