Trisha Goddard says she's accused of having 'accent of the oppressor' on This Morning

This Morning hosts Holly Willougby and Phillip Schofield spoke to chat show host Trisha Goddard on Wednesday's show.

They were speaking about the death of George Floyd in police custody, and the resulting protests against racism seen in the United States in recent days.

Discussing her own experiences of racism, Trisha revealed she is quizzed on her accent, which some think is a "white" accent.

Trisha, who was on video call from her home in Connecticut, has been accused of "having the accent of the oppressor," she explained.

"People have asked me why I'm speaking 'white', because I look the colour but I have the accent of the oppressor, almost," she said.

Trisha also noted that the police in the UK are trained for a longer length of time than those in the states, and yet the US police are heavily armed.

"That, to me, is astounding," she stated.

Her comments come as shocking footage of the police tear-gassing and firing rubber bullets at protesters from point blank range has been circulating.

Trisha said where she lived, the protests were all peaceful, and said most of them are.

But she added, she notices more racial segregation, especially in relationships, in the US than in the UK which has a higher rate of interracial marriage.

She was joined via video chat by Matthew Wright, who was sad to say he does not believe these current protests will change anything, because they have happened for decades over similar killings.

"I lose faith in humanity," he said.

Speaking about president Donald Trump, he added: "It breaks my heart to see the leader of the free world almost urge for military action against his own people, rather than addressing the great social injustices weighed on people primarily for the colour of their skin that are visible throughout the United States."
