Three journalists in Tripura were attacked on Sunday while covering a clash between BJP and CPI-M workers, the Indian Express reported. The incident took place in Khayerpur, about 10 km from the state capital Agartala.
The journalists were identified as Prangopal Acharya, Pintu Paul and Biswajit Debnath. According to the Tribune, the police said: "About 4-5 persons were wounded and the three scribes were attacked, but they were not injured. Police is investigating the case."
BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee claimed that the incident occurred “in front of the police” and urged the police to arrest the “real culprits involved in the incident”. Three complaints have been filed, including one from a journalist organisation, but there have been no arrests yet.
According to a statement released by a media rights body, the Assembly of Journalists, the journalists had been “threatened with dire consequences and [a group of 7 to 8] miscreants tried to snatch their cameras”, Express reported.
The statement said: "In a complaint filed with Bodhjungnagar police station, the scribes informed that they were threatened with dire consequences and the miscreants tried to snatch their cameras."
