AGARTALA: The state police has suspended constable Subrata Debbarma in connection with the escape of 54-year-old Hakan Zamburakan from the Agartala Govt Medical College where the latter was brought there for routine health check-up on July 9 last. Debbarma was on security duty when Zambukaran, an undertrial prisoner, was brought to the hospital for treatment.
Zambukaran is a Turkish national and is known to be a ATM hacker. Tripura Police have intensified search operation across the state to nab Zambukaran and the Indo-Bangladesh border, airports and railway stations have been put on alert. Zamburakan reportedly fled from the hospital with the help of some outsiders who had helped him to move out from the state by road.
Meanwhile, Tripura Police have also alerted it's Assam and West Bengal counterparts requesting them to step up surveillance on vehicles movement on the highways in the respective states. A senior police officer said they have gathered some information about Zamburakan's whereabouts and he would be arrested very soon.
Police said after preliminary inquiry revealed that there was dereliction of duty on the part of constable Debbarma when the undertrial was brought to the hospital although there were five other policemen in the team. Investigation has also been launched into the role of other policemen and whether they were involved in providing safe passage to Zamburakan. According to report, Zamburakan escaped through a window of the toilet taking advantage of security lapses in the hospital. Zamburakan was one of the four foreign nationals -- two Turks and two Bangladeshis - who were arrested in November 2019 at Belgharia in central Kolkata in connection with hacking of a large number of Indian bank accounts including cloning of ATM cards of about 60 SBI customers of Tripura.
