Triple J Unearthed picks up Lake Macquarie band Herd Immunity's debut single

TOM Toft describes deciding on a band name as an "excruciatingly painful" process.

"I came up with the gimmick that we should base it off something that is relevant to the times, so we were originally going to call it one of the COVID vaccines, either Pfizer or AstraZeneca," Tom said.

"But it was actually our dad who came up with the name, Herd Immunity, he heard it on the news."

Belmont High year 12 student Tom, 18, and his younger brother Tim, 15, had been jamming together for years before they formed Herd Immunity in 2020.

They recorded their first single Before I Go in April this year at Sawtooth Studios with Clint Topic and Simon Clendinning and entered it in Triple J's Unearthed High competition. They released the song on July 15. It's also available on Spotify.

"It was one of the first songs I ever wrote, full on tried," Tom said.

"The message of the song is not to dwell on past events, just look to the future and move on, let the sunshine through and cleanse you from past events.

"I thought it would be a good introduction about what we are."

The brothers planned to enter the competition last year, but had originally recorded the song on a laptop in Tom's bedroom and said it hadn't sounded right - until now.

"It feels great to have a single out," Tim said. "It feels like we're with the big boys now."

The Jewells brothers said they had each been writing their own songs for years and started writing together recently.

They have more than an album worth of material ready and hope to become professional musicians, recording music and performing live.

"We want to conquer the world!" Tim joked.

The brothers count English band Oasis and brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher as their main influence.

"It's everything about them," Tom said.

"Their attitude, style, look, sound, there's nothing around now that's like them. Their story from rags to riches is inspiring."

Tom said he was the Noel in Herd Immunity, because he was the songwriter and the main guitarist, while Tim was the Liam "because he's the attitude and the singer".

However they're determined not to replicate the Gallaghers' feuding.

"We'll try not to let our egos get too big, I think we'll get along better than what they do," Tom said. "We'll keep off each other's nerves," Tim said.

The Tofts both sing and play guitar, bass, drums and piano, after their dad Barry introduced them to music as children.

Both are largely self taught but have also taken guitar lessons from Bruce Mathiske and singing lessons from Upbeat's Courtney Thomas.
