Triple death crash driver sobs in court as he recalls horror smash with double-decker bus

A triple death crash driver sobbed and said sorry yesterday as he relived how a day picking flowers turned to horror.

Marin Rachev, 35, broke down as he recalled laughing with his friends 20 minutes before three of them died.

The Bulgarian dad of two had driven to Scotland from Cornwall two days before the tragedy to earn money for his family.

He said he was haunted at night by memories of husband-and-wife Zaharina Hristova and Silyan Stefanov, and Dimitar Georgiev, who were killed after the car they were in was hit by a double-decker bus.

Rachev, accused at the High Court in Aberdeen of causing their deaths by dangerous driving, told his lawyer Frances Connor QC: “I do not wish this experience on anyone.

“It means your friends are coming into your dreams. I am so sorry about this.”

The six-day trial has heard how Rachev was driving a Renault alleged to have crossed in front of a CityLinkGold bus on the A90 Aberdeen-Dundee road.

Rear passengers Dimitar, 32, Zaharina, 37, and Silyan, 42, were all killed.

Zaharina and Silyan were thrown from the vehicle and hit by a southbound car.

The trial, before Lord Kinclaven, continues.
