Triodos Bank tops global league table after funding most clean energy deals in world

A Bristol-headquartered ethical bank has topped a global league table after funding more clean energy deals than any other financial institution in the world last year.

Triodas financed 73 deals worth a total $630million (£494million) across Europe, according to the Clean Energy Pipeline Global League Table.

The deals included onshore wind, offshore wind, solar, hydro and energy efficiency projects.

It is the fifth year running that Triodos has topped the list, which is compiled by news and data service Clean Energy Pipeline.

Philip Bazin, energy sector lead at Triodos Bank UK, said: "Our team’s strengths come from our specialist expertise and flexible approach, our product offering and our European reach.

“We have worked on projects of all different sizes, including smaller or community-level ones that other banks and debt funds may not be prepared to look at.”

The deals that took place in 2019 include the financing of a 10mw battery storage project co-sited and connected to an existing 24MW onshore wind project in the Netherlands; funding energy service companies supplying sustainable cooling and heating in the UK and the Netherlands; a district heating project in Spain; and the development of a financing product for the German rooftop PV market.

Mr Bazin said Triodos was continuing to work to support the sector “amid the current challenges”.

The bank has been operating in Europe for 40 years and first entered the renewables market in the mid-1980s with a focus on wind energy.

It has since broadened its focus across the wider renewable and environmental sectors and said it now develops support for energy storage, grid infrastructure, smart meters and heat networks.
