Trio of Osaka by-election candidates polling neck and neck

Three candidates are polling neck and neck in a by-election for the House of Representatives in Osaka Constituency No. 12, according to a Yomiuri Shimbun analysis.

The analysis was based on the results of Yomiuri Shimbun telephone surveys and coverage of the upcoming election.

A close fight is continuing in Osaka No. 12 among Fumitake Fujita of Nippon Ishin no Kai, independent Shinji Tarutoko and the Liberal Democratic Party's Shinpei Kitakawa, who is also recommended by Komeito.

In Okinawa Constituency No. 3 -- the other by-election for the lower house -- independent Tomohiro Yara is ahead of the LDP's Aiko Shimajiri, also recommended by Komeito, according to the analysis.

As 30 percent of voters in Osaka No. 12 and nearly 20 percent of those in Okinawa No. 3 have yet to express their opinions, the situation may change during the final stage of the election campaign. The elections in both constituencies will be held on April 21.

The survey was conducted from Thursday through Saturday using random digit dialing in those constituencies. In Osaka No. 12, the survey obtained responses from 699 households of the 1,297 determined to have an eligible voter in residence, for a response rate of 54 percent. In Okinawa No. 3, the response rate was 46 percent, or 578 responses from 1,270 households as above.
