Trio held for theft of car engines across Mumbai

MUMBAI: Three persons were arrested by Byculla police in connection with the theft of engine controller module (ECM) machines from cars after breaking the door locks. Police scanned footage from 75 surveillance cameras and analysed phone call data before zeroing in on Imran Khan, 31, Shafiq Shaikh, 35, and Shaukat Ali Shaikh, 48.

The trio was picked up from Mazgaon on August 6 and six machines worth Rs58,000 were recovered. A teenager, Irfan Shaikh, who purchased the stolen ECMs for Rs 5,000-7,000 per piece has also been arrested, police said.

Another 29 machines were recovered from Irfan. The gang has committed similar thefts in the jurisdictions of Kurla, DB Marg, NM Joshi Marg, Mahim, Dharavi, Tardeo and Vinoba Bhave police stations in the past. tnn
