Trio charged over teen girl's crash death

The committal hearing for three people charged over a fatal crash has been delayed until July 2021. (AAP)

More than a dozen witnesses are expected to be questioned over the death of a teenage girl in a Melbourne car crash.

Nikkita Wells, 17, died at Rowville on February 17 last year.

Three people - 22-year-old Mikayla Wells, and Damien Hill and Troy Elsbury-Burn, both 29 - are charged with offences including dangerous driving causing her death.

Hill and Troy Elsbury-Burn allegedly raced each other for nearly 30km, through freeways and suburban roads, before the crash.

Mikayla Wells is accused of drug-driving on her P-plates and changing lanes unsafely.

A committal hearing, to determine whether there's enough evidence for the trio to stand trial, has been delayed until July 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The committal was meant to begin in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Twelve civilians and three police officers were expected to be questioned over the crash.

But the court was told it wasn't feasible to conduct the hearing totally online.

The trio remain on bail ahead of their next court date.
