Trio brandished machetes during Lanarkshire street disturbance

Three men were caught brandishing machetes during a disturbance on a Wishaw street.

Police were alerted to the trouble by CCTV operators, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard on Friday.

Facing charges were Mark Ledwith, 28, of Gateside Road, Craigneuk, Scott Cairns, 32, care of Barlinnie prison, and David Buddie, 21, also of Gateside Road.

They admitted brandishing weapons, fighting and committing a breach of the peace in Gateside Road on March 8 last year.

The trio also admitted illegal possession of bladed items, namely machetes.

The court heard that police were alerted to the fighting around 11.30pm.

Several units were despatched, but by the time officers got to Gateside Road the men involved in the disturbance had run off in different directions.

However, Cairns was caught after a short chase and found to be carrying a machete.

Ledwith was detained in nearby Golfhill Road and he, too, was in possession of a blade.

A baseball bat and a shovel that was used in the fight were also recovered.

Police officers reviewed CCTV footage and identified Buddie who was also carrying a machete.

Cairns spent nine months in custody following his arrest, but has since been freed on bail.

Sheriff Andrew McIntyre deferred sentence on all three accused until next month for background reports and electronic tagging assessments.

He told them: “These charges are very serious, but all options remain open.”
