Trinity College supplying battery lamps to students due to blackout fears

Trinity College is ensuring their students living on-campus are well-equipped in the case of a blackout this winter.

The university is suppling battery lamps to all students living on campus . Trinity said the move was a "precautionary measure".

The lamps will be provided to the 1,500 students who live in the college's accommodation. In an email to students, Trinity said the lamps should only be used in the event of a power outage.

They wrote: "You may be aware of media reports that electricity suppliers in Ireland have advised of the possibility of power outages this winter. For your safety, the University has purchased a battery powered lamp for each individual resident.

"Your lamp will be supplied with batteries, however, it is your responsibility to check your lamp regularly and purchase your own replacement batteries. Each lamp is provided for your safety therefore it is essential they are only used in the event of a power outage. The lamps remain the property of the University and must remain in your bedroom when you depart."

A spokeswoman for Trinity College told Dublin Live: "This is a precautionary measure. We understand that there is some risk of blackouts this coming winter as commented on by the media. Should that happen, we want to make sure our campus residents have back-up lighting."
