Trinity College Dublin lecturer reported missing after reaching Mount Everest peak

A Dublin university lecturer has been reported missing after reaching the peak of Mount Everest.

Trinity College Professor Seamus Lawless, 39, had reached the peak of the world's tallest mountain for the first time this morning.

It's been reported that Prof Lawless, from Bray, Co Wicklow  slipped near the balcony area near the summit, Dublin Live reports.

He was part of an eight-member expedition and went missing after he reportedly fell from an altitude of 8,300 metres.

Trinity College had congratulated Prof Lawless and the expedition on reaching the summit this morning.

He said: "This morning Seamus Lawless, Professor at Trinity's Adapt Centre reached the summit of Mount Everest. Congratulations to you and @irelandeverest team. Your achievement is tremendous."

In a statement about his disappearance, Trinity College said: "Seamus and his family are in our thoughts during this extremely distressing time.

"This morning his family, friends and colleagues shared his joy on reaching the peak of Mount Everest.

"We hope that Seamus is found safely as soon as possible and until then we will be offering any support we can to his family.”

The academic has been following a lifelong dream to scale the world's highest peak - and was doing so as part of a charity effort to raise €25,000 for Barretstown, the charity that supports seriously ill children and their families.

Dublin Live has contacted the Department of Foreign Affairs for comment.
