Trinity College closes all tourist attractions and moves all lectures online following COVID-19 case on campus

Trinity College has announced the closure of all of its tourist attractions and moved all of its lectures online following a case of Covid-19 on its campus.

The Dublin university, which has its main campus on College Green in the city centre, said that from today Book of Kells exhibition and Old Library, the Science Gallery and the Douglas Hyde Gallery will all be closed to the public.

And from tomorrow morning, March 11, all lectures will be delivered online for the rest of the semester rather than in a lecture hall.

The university has said that tutorials, seminars and laboratory practicals will all continue to be given in the usual fashion while using social distancing protocols.

A spokesman said: "Both of these measures are being taken in the interests of the health and well-being of our students and staff and to decrease any potential impacts on the larger community.

"This will allow Trinity to maintain continuity of teaching and learning while minimising the need to bring together students in large groups.

"This will slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus, but further measures may be necessary and these arrangements will be kept under continuous review."

A case of Covid-19 (coronavirus) was confirmed on campus last Thursday, with moves to trace anyone who may have been in contact taking place immediately.

An email sent to students and staff from the University read: "We were informed of a positive case of Covid-19 (coronavirus) within Trinity College Dublin late on Thursday night (March 5).

"The relevant part of the University (Floor 4 of the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute), and the lifts in TBSI, have been closed as a precautionary measure and will be cleaned in accordance with HSE guidelines."

There are now 24 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.
