Tributes to 'wonderful, kind, intelligent ' woman who died after being hit by car

POLICE named the woman who died after being hit by a car in Glasgow city centre.

Chinenye Vera Okonkwo, was hit on St Vincent Street on Thursday, February 2. She was 33 and from Nigeria.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her family paid tribute to a "wonderful, kind, intelligent young woman".

They said: "Chinenye was a wonderful, kind, intelligent young woman with a strong faith in God. She had a passion to succeed and whatever obstacles she faced were overcome.

“She was very family-orientated and always had time for everyone. Our lives will never be the same without her.” 

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7.40pm on Thursday, February 2, 2023, officers received a report of a crash involving two vehicles and a pedestrian on St Vincent Street, Glasgow.

“Emergency services attended but the female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The driver of one of the vehicles, a 28-year-old woman, was arrested in connection with the incident and released pending further enquiries.

“The road was closed while crash investigations were carried out and reopened around 3.15am.”
