Tributes to 'well-loved and happy' Leeds man who died after fire at rented flat 'unfit for humans'

Tributes have flooded in to a 'well-loved, happy and polite' Leeds man who died after a fire at his dodgy rented flat, deemed 'unfit for humans'.

Philip Sheridan, 32, died from smoke inhalation after a huge blaze at his £75-per-week windowless accommodation.

The landlord had not bothered to fit a smoke alarm in the basement room, which only had one exit - a door with no handle.

Philip managed to escape the property during the fire in June 2019 - but his escape was impeded by the conditions in the flat and smoke had infiltrated his lungs. 10 days later he died in hospital from complications arising from smoke inhalation.

Police interviewed the landlords on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence but they were freed without charge.

Philip, who worked in a second-hand furniture shop, was well known around Leeds.

Colleen Harper Sowray commented: "Oh my God I can't believe I'm reading this, he was to polite always said to hi to me when I saw him outside his shop." She went on to describe Philip as a "well-loved and respected lad".

"He was always happy and one of the most friendliest guys I knew."

Terry Bosomworth said Philip was, "such a nice lad an allways happy go lucky."

Gill Coyne added: "I remember this guy from the second-hand shop over the road from WH? Lovely lad, always smiling."
