Tributes to talented Co Tyrone cyclist after teen's tragic death

Tributes have been paid to a talented Co Tyrone cyclist and electrician after he tragically passed away following a workplace accident on Saturday.

Adam Newell, from Coagh, was a member of East Tyrone Cycling Club and was described as a "very talented young rider".

Adam is survived by his parents Andrew and Mary and sisters Megan and Jemma.

The 18-year-old was a former pupil of Cookstown High School, where his youngest sister is a current pupil.

A statement from Cookstown High School said on Monday: “It was with extreme shock and sadness that the sudden and tragic death of the former pupil was received by the school community over the weekend.

“Adam was a fun-loving and sociable pupil who was known and well liked across the school for the duration of his five years in Cookstown High School.

“Many of his peers are current Year 14 pupils and it is among his many friends and of course his loving family that his death will be felt most keenly.

“His sister Megan, a former pupil, and Jemma, current Year 12 pupil, will be remembered in prayer by the school community, as will his parents and wider family circle.

“The tragic accidental death will be a painful and difficult situation to come to terms with and as a school, we can only hope to support Jemma, her family and Adam’s friends as best we can over the days, weeks and months ahead.”

East Tyrone Cycling Club said in a post on Facebook that Adam would be sorely missed.

The club added: “Today we heard of the tragic and untimely death of one of our junior members Adam Newell.

“Adam was a talented young rider who loved racing and competitive cycling. He had a natural ability on the bike and was a very popular member of our club.

“We all have fond memories of Adam and he will be sorely missed. We extend our most sincere and heartfelt sympathies to Adam’s family.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time."

Trevor Wilson, Mid Ulster UUP councillor for Cookstown, said it was a "tragic accident".

Cllr Wilson added: “It appears to have been a tragic accident, and my thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this sad time."
