Tributes to pregnant Croydon woman and her husband in Air India crash

Vaibhav Patel and Jinal Goswami were celebrating their baby shower in Ahmedabad before the plane crash -

Tributes have been paid to a pregnant woman and her husband who had recently moved to Croydon before being killed in the Air India plane crash.

Vaibhav Patel, 29, and his 27-year-old wife Jinal Goswami had travelled to Ahmedabad for their baby shower, according to reports.

Mrs Goswami was seven months pregnant when she was killed when a flight bound for London Gatwick appeared to lose power moments after take-off and crashed into a doctors’ hostel in Ahmedabad.

At least 270 people were killed, 241 of them passengers, were killed when the Boeing Dreamliner crashed, including 52 British nationals.

Nirav Patel, who had been friends with Vaibhav for over a decade, told the BBC that the young couple had been excited to have their first child.

The couple had recently moved from Southampton to Croydon and had been married for four years.

Mr Patel explained he had worked with Vaibhav at a Papa Johns pizza restaurant in Portswood and described him as a "good person who always supported his family and friends".

He said: "The couple were in Ahmedabad to celebrate their own baby shower. It was on the 5 June. She was seven months pregnant. They were very happy.

"Vaibhav did not have a father, so he was the big son supporting the family back in India."

News of the couple’s death was a huge shock to their friends and family in India. Mr Patel explained Viabhav had rung him two days before the flight to say he was coming home to the UK.

"We were very good friends and had so much fun together,” he continued. “Many trips around India, like to Goa or Rajasthan. This is a massive loss."

A funeral was held in India on Monday.

Vaibhav Patel’s former manager Harshil Thakar described him as a “true gentleman” who worked very hard and as a “family man”.

Several families from London were among those killed when the plane crashed into a residential area near the airport in Ahmedabad.

Dozens gathered at the Siddhashram Shakti Centre in Harrow over the weekend, where 20 of the victims are thought to have previously worshipped, to pay tribute.

Among the victims was Arjun Patoliya, who had been flying back to London after keeping a promise to his late wife Bharatiben to scatter her ashes in the sacred Narmada River.

The couple had two children, aged four and eight, who stayed at home in the UK and are now mourning the deaths of both their parents in the space of a week.

Just one person who was on board the plane survived the crash. British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh spoke of seeing people “dying in front of my eyes”.

The 40-year-old says he still “can’t believe how I survived”.

Mr Ramesh is still under observation for some of his injuries but doctors say he is doing well and will be discharged soon.

Four investigators from the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch arrived in India and have expertise in aircraft operations, engineering and recorded data.

Meanwhile, hundreds of relatives have provided DNA samples to help officials identify victims’ remains.
