Tributes to paid to Emmerdale director who has died aged 77

Tributes have been paid to former Emmerdale director Mervyn Cumming who has died.

The 77-year-old oversaw over 100 episodes of the ITV soap between 1980 and 1993. His son Ben Cumming announced the sad news on social media on Saturday, February 6.

He said: “My dad Mervyn passed away last night. I know he had a lot of happy years at Emmerdale.

“I remember lots of happy times there when I was growing up too. Thought people may want to know.”

IMDb lists that Mervyn was born in Belfast and he developed a keen interest in drama from a young age. He studied English literature and drama at Leeds University. He then taught English and drama at Huddersfield College, later becoming head of drama at Garforth Comprehensive School.

He also worked at York University Television Service and at Leeds Polytechnic Television Service.

On TV, he also directed episodes of Coronation Street, EastEnders, Brookside and Byker Grove amongst other big shows.

Viewers of the soaps have paid their respects to Mervyn.

Simon Somers said: “My condolences to his family. A very kind generous warm hearted man. A consummate director. An all round good guy. Will miss you.”

Frederick Pyne said: “So very, very sorry to hear this. I remember him so well when I was in Emmerdale Farm. Condolences and love to you and family.”

Trin Rees said: “So sorry to hear this. Thoughts with you and family and friends.”
