Tributes to mum and her son, 3, who died after breaking down on motorway

Tributes have been paid to a mum and a three-year-old boy who died in a horror crash on the A180 motorway.

Nicola Courtney, 34, and her toddler Lucas Page were travelling along the motorway near Immingham in North East Lincolnshire in a blue Ford Focus on Friday night, HullLive reports. Police believe that the car broke down in a live lane.

A driver said they swerved around the 'stranded' car at around 8.45pm and reported it to police. At 9.06pm, a white articulated lorry collided with the stationary car and tragically, Nicola and Lucas died at the scene.

Tributes have been paid to the pair, from Scunthorpe, by heartbroken friends and loved ones. A friend of Nicola's said: "This world is a very sad one we live in. One of my bestest friends and her little boy are going to be missed so much by so many."

Another tribute read: "Absolutely devastated to find out my dear friend Nicola Courtney and baby Lucas passed away! You literally never know the last time you're going to speak to someone is!

"I’m heartbroken. You will be missed."

Others passed their best wishes onto Nicola's other children, who are now without a mum. A message read: "What a terrible accident. I am so sorry to hear this and RIP to Nicola and Lucas.

"I feel very sad for their family and loved ones. My thoughts and prayers to them at this sad time. I wish nothing but love and light to the poor boys who lost their mother."

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: "A mum and her little boy who died in a collision on the A180, Immingham on Friday 10 March, have been named by their families. Whilst formal identification is yet to take place, they have been named as Nicola Courtney, aged 34 and Lucas Page, aged 3, from Scunthorpe.

"Their families continue to be supported by specialist trained officers and partnering agencies and have asked for their privacy to be respected at this incredibly difficult time. At around 9.06pm on Friday 10 March a white articulated lorry was travelling westbound along the A180, Immingham between Stallingborough and Brocklesby when it collided with stationary blue Ford Focus which is thought to have broken down in a live lane.

"The full circumstances of the collision will be established during this complex investigation, and we would ask for people not to speculate about the circumstances of the crash. We are continuing to appeal for any witnesses who have not yet spoken to us to get in touch.

"If you saw either the collision itself, the vehicles prior to the collision or if you have any dash-cam footage showing the vehicles prior to the collision, please call our non-emergency number 101 quoting log 557 of 10 March. A voluntary referral has been made to the Independent Office of Police Complaints (IOPC) in relation to the collision."
