Tributes to 'much loved' grandfather who died after being hit by car in Chester-le-Street

The family of a "much loved father and grandfather" who was tragically killed when he was hit by a car in County Durham have paid tribute to him.

James Terrance Hewitt, known locally as Terry, died after he was struck by a Ford Fiesta while he was crossing the road in Front Street, Chester-le-Street at 8.30am on December 3.

The 91-year-old, who lived in the town, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious head injuries but died a few days later.

In a statement, his family said: “It is with deepest sympathy that we announce the death of our father, James Terrance Hewitt, known to many as Terry, who was involved in a tragic collision in Chester-le-Street.

“He was a much loved father and grandfather and will be sadly missed.

“We wish to thank everyone for their support and ask to be left so that we can grieve in peace.”

Officers from Durham Constabulary have begun an investigation into the circumstances of the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference number 58 of December 3.
