Tributes to 'Mr Glenburn' Ricky Bicker after death of Ayrshire amateur football stalwart

An amateur football club is in mourning this week after the death of its "rock".

Ricky Bicker, 58, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning after illness – leaving a huge hole to fill at Glenburn Miners Welfare.

The secretary of the Prestwick club had also played for, coached and managed his hometown team throughout a near 35-year association.

Officials have spoken of their devastation at the passing of Ricky, who was described as the "life and soul" of the club.

President Bryan Allan said: "Myself and Ricky were like a double act when it came to football. Wherever I went, he went, and vice-versa.

"He has been a near constant at the club since first getting involved in 1986 and has pretty much done it all here.

"As a player, he was a cracking central midfielder who would regularly win player of the year awards.

"Bar a brief spell when I took him to Minishant, where he also spent a couple of seasons as manager, Glenburn was always his love."

As a manager, Ricky took Glenburn to the old Ayrshire Second Division title.

And latterly in his role as secretary, he took great pride in enjoying their milestone success in the Ayrshire Cup a couple of seasons ago.

Bryan, 62, added: "Ricky was a rock for the club – a huge presence who will leave behind such a hole to fill.

"We are now a community club awarded through the SFA and Ricky was a major driving force behind that.

"Our youth system has more than 400 kids registered and that's something Ricky was really proud of."

A minute's tribute will be held before Saturday's Scottish Cup tie at home to Vale of Clyde.

Ricky is survived by wife Jackie, children Paul and Ainsley and his six grandchildren.

His funeral will be held next Thursday, October 7 at Masonhill Crematorium at 9.45am.
