Tributes to man found in river as update given on work to identify him

Tributes have poured in after a man's body was discovered in the River Alt.

The man was confirmed dead at the scene

Police have recovered the body from the scene and have taken it for further testing.

The ECHO understands that despite much speculation on social media - the identity of the man has not yet been confirmed.

Posting on Facebook many ECHO readers paid their respects to the man and his family.

Lizzie Illy Olliffe, said: Whom ever it may be, thoughts go out to their families, RIP."

Road closures remain in place on Brewery Lane in Melling following the discovery.

ECHO reader, James Sweeney said: "Rest in peace to the man. Thoughts and prayers to the families."

Kathy Murphy, said: "Very tragic for all involved."

In an update, a spokesman from Merseyside Police, said: "Merseyside Police can confirm enquiries are underway following the discovery of a man’s body in the River Alt in the Melling area this morning.

"Emergency services were called at around 7am and are currently working to identify the man.

"Road closures remain in place on Brewery Lane, Melling.

"Please avoid the area whilst officers deal with the incident."
