Tributes to Liverpool's very own 'rocket man' after battle with long illness

A well-known figure who was Liverpool's very own "rocket man" has sadly died, it was announced on Monday.

Jay St John, otherwise known as "Jet Pack Jay", was a familiar figure on the River Mersey who saluted visiting cruise liners by jetting alongside them.

Today Cruise Liverpool posted on its social media channels: "Many of our followers will know of the incredibly talented Jay, known as "Jet Pack Jay" who has long been a big part of the work we do at Cruise Liverpool.

"Sadly, after a long illness, Jay has passed away - his funeral will be at 11am on 20 July.

"Jay was a lovely, enthusiastic and passionate gentleman who always made sure that all our visiting Cruises were given a welcome / send off to remember and we will forever remember him...Our thoughts are with Amy, his family and friends at this difficult time."

Mr St John's futuristic machine looked like a skateboard, but sucked up water through a tube, before blowing it out of two jet nozzles to power the rider up to 45ft in the air. It was controlled by the rider moving their feet.

He would don a specially-made neon suit to propel himself into the air above Princes Dock, as fans cheered on, and also used the docks to train ahead of taking part flyboarding championships. The machine was created in 2011 by jet ski rider Franky Zapata.
