Tributes to leading Kirkcudbright artist Pauline Saul

One of Kirkcudbright’s leading artists has died at the age of 73.

Pauline Saul passed away at her Greengate home on Christmas Eve with her family by her side.

Along with husband Colin, Pauline strongly believed in bringing art to the people whenever possible.

The duo organised the award-winning Kirkcudbright Art and Crafts Trail and played a key role in the town’s annual Festival of Light.

Pauline worked at Greengate Studio where in her own words she specialised in “painting cats in a quirky style and fearsome fish in mixed media”.

Colin, son Eddie and daughter Kathryn have been left devastated by their loss but are consoled by priceless memories.

A heartbroken Colin told the News: “Pauline was determined and talented and would do anything for anybody.

“Anything to do with art in Kirkcudbright she was always right there at the front wanting to be involved. Pauline was always so delighted to do things for people and would do so willingly.

“She loved her house and garden in Kirkcudbright and would welcome anybody to come in and see her studio.

“Her work found its way all round the world – her paintings are everywhere.

Kathryn said: “Mum was so loved by all of her family and friends. People have been saying she brought so much colour and brightness to the town. There have been lovely words from the community and we have been quite overwhelmed to be honest.

“We are getting cards of condolence through the door by the second here.”

She added: “We are thankful for all the support from the Kirkcudbright district nursing team and the regional Marie Curie team as well. We were so lucky to get mum home with their support and get that last few weeks with her.

“She fought bravely for just over a year against cancer and was always saying how lucky she was to get that little bit of extra time. She remained incredibly positive, uplifting and inspirational throughout her illness which was a great source of comfort to us all.”

Local councillor Pauline Drysdale also extended her sympathies to the family.

She said: “The loss of Pauline Saul is devastating for the Kirkcudbright community.

“She was a truly inspirational and creative lady, loved and admired by so many.

“Sincere condolences and sympathies to her husband Colin Saul, her family and her friends at this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, the family has set up a Pauline Saul JustGiving page in aid of Marie Curie.

Kathryn said: “We just wanted to do something that would help the charity to help other people.”
