Tributes to 'inspirational' creator of Leeds Little Free Libraries after passing

People from all corners of Leeds have united in grief after the sad passing of Carry Franklin, the woman behind Leeds Little Free Libraries.

The concept is simple - leave a book and pick one up - and saw purpose built beautifully decorated 'book boxes' begin appearing on our streets.

"Thank you Carry for having the inspiration and drive to spearhead a little project that has had such a big impact" were the words of Jo Fiddes who worked with Carry to set up a little library in Bramley.

There are now 35 of them across the whole of Leeds, part of the non-for-profit scheme to bring communities together. In an article in The Guardian in August last year, Carry described them as 'big, solid gestures of love, sharing and hopefulness'.

The sad news of her death on June 4 was shared on social media this week, and has since seen an outpouring of tributes and love for what she achieved in Leeds.

One of Carry's most recent projects was working with Found Fiction - a scheme to inspire readers to come together to create stories that represented their part of the city. Notepads and pens were left in some of the little libraries for everyone to get creative!

Steve Clarkson, founder of the project, said: "By spearheading the Little Free Library, she brought love and literature to people of all ages across the city.

"This inspirational woman leaves behind a truly magical legacy to be carried forward by the community she built. Our condolences to her family and friends."
