Tributes to 'funny and humble' shopper who gave away goods to people in need

Tributes have been paid to a 'funny, genuine and humble' shopper whose generosity helped struggling people across her community.

Carol Ogden, 71, from Kirk Hallam, was a regular in charity shops and the Ilkeston Morrison's store.

She would often load her trolley with reduced goods and then dish them out to people.

Friend and neighbour, Brian Kingly, who regularly saw Carol around Ilkeston market, described her as 'a gem', adding: "One of the stallholders said she was a diamond with a heart of gold and that's right.

"I've known her for years and years and she has always been a good friend.

"She has always been a character.

"On the market she would buy sweets and cakes, things like that, and give them away. At Morrisons, she would do the same."

Carol spent 15 years as a machinist at Beauvale Furnishings and then later stopped working to care for her mum.

After her mum passed away, Carol moved into Hargreaves Court.

Sister Lorraine Duncan, 69, said: "Everybody knows her in Ilkeston. She was funny, very genuine and humble.

"She liked to go to Nottingham on the bus to visit our mother's grave in Carlton.

"She would go round the charity shops and then come back on the bus with lots of things."

At the age of 40, Carol learnt how to swim and soon after raised £200 for a cancer charity with a long distance swim at Ilkeston swimming pool.

Her other sister Dianne Scott, 67, added: "She used to think about other people rather than herself.

"She was very independent."

Carol's funeral is at St John's Church, Nottingham Road, Ilkeston on Thursday August 19 at 10:15am.
