Tributes to former Hucknall headteacher who 'brought pupils' learning to life'

Heartfelt tributes have been made in memory of a much-loved headteacher who dedicated four decades to his school.

John Pett died peacefully at home on Saturday, February 20 aged 75.

He had been head teacher at Hucknall National Junior School - now Hucknall National C of E Primary - and described as the "embodiment" of what the school stands for.

A touching tribute written by another former head teacher, Kerry Palmer, has been shared to highlight special memories of Mr Pett.

Kerry wrote: "‘Mr Pett’, for thousands of children, parents and grandparents, a National institution.

"For 40 years John Pett was an embodiment of what National is all about.

"A teacher who loved children and his job – and was so good at it. For whom time and effort were no object and whose professional expertise and enthusiasm brought pupils’ learning to life, boosting confidence and self-esteem.

"Everyone who knew him has a multitude of fond memories. His humour and encouragement in the classroom, particularly for those who struggled a bit, all those musical productions and concerts, coaching and cheering the school football team in all weathers, school holidays and activity weeks and so much more.

"We all have our special memories and reasons to be grateful for knowing John Pett. I knew him as a friend and colleague from the days when we were both newly qualified teachers and Mr Davies was head – he started the same time as Miss Wellington and went on to marry her. In the staffroom he was always good for a laugh and helped build team spirit whilst embracing the multitude of changes that came to schools over the decades as we tackled new responsibilities.

"He will be sadly missed by so many as we hold his wife, Jean, his daughters and families in our thoughts and prayers. Be sure that before too long we will all gather to celebrate his life. Rest in peace, John. You are singing with the angels."

Former colleague, Julie King added that Mr Pett's funeral will take place at St Wilfred's in Calverton on Monday, March 8 followed by a burial at Tithe Green in Oxton - although this is invitation only due to restrictions.

The family has requested in place of flowers, those wishing to pay their respects can do so by leaving a welcome donation at www.braintumourresearch.org
