Tributes to former Boys' Brigade Captain who dedicated life to helping young people across Pollok

Tributes have been paid to a former Boys' Brigade Captain who supported young people across Pollok for more than 60 years.

Tom Harold sadly passed away on February 28 aged 71.

His colleagues have described him as someone who dedicated his life 'to serving and giving to others'.

A Lieutenant and ex-Captain, Tom was an integral part of the 208th Glasgow Greater Pollok Boys' Brigade for over six decades and helped shape the lives of countless young people.

Tom spent 50 years as an officer. Following the sudden death of an officer several years ago, he was promoted to the role of Captain which he carried out for 27 years. He remained within the team and played an integral part as Officer in Charge of the Junior Section until his death.

During his time with the Boys' Brigade, he took part in activities across the district, was a first aid instructor and organised the Battalion Cross Country events at Bellahouston Park. He also attended international camps in the likes of Tasmania, Jamaica and Australia where he normally attended quartermaster/cooks duties.

Back home in Pollok, he served his Company until his death. Having never expected to be captain, he is said to have 'stepped up to the mark when needed and excelled'.

Colin Harkins, Captain of the 208th Glasgow, said: "Over the last 50 years Tom has guided and supported countless young people across Pollok and its surrounds to realise their potential. He has brought out the greatest in many a young man within the Company and even in death his teachings and legacy will live on.

"The Tom Harold’s of today are extremely hard to come by… someone who is willing to dedicate their life to serving and giving to others.

"Tom’s legacy will live on, he has touched so many life’s, including mine.

"This week I had the hardest job in the world to do to tell the Boys that Mr Harold had passed away. It’s humbling to know that he has had the same effect on the Boys of today as he did on me some 32 years ago.

"Tom Harold; Officer, Captain, Lieutenant, friend…the Staff team and Boys here at the 208 th Glasgow, along with many friends /colleagues across St James’, the Brigade and beyond Salute you for everything. Pollok is a poorer place at this time. Rest in peace."
