Tributes to Co Armagh mum who died in New York City plane crash

Tributes have poured in for a Co Armagh woman who died in a plane crash in New York over the weekend.

Margaret O'Neill, 61, died when a seaplane piloted by local restaurant owner Joe Oppedisano crashed into a concrete pier in Queens.

Mrs O’Neill’s partner Jose Urena, 66, a skyscraper mechanic, also suffered a shattered ankle in the crash.

The two men remain in hospital where they are being treated for their injuries.

Speaking to the New York Daily News, Alberto Vargas, Urena’s brother-in-law, said: “She has a heart of gold and she will be missed by many people and was loved by many people.

“We are very sad and heartbroken that she is gone.”

Writing a post online, Mr Oppedisano's daughter said it was a "tragic day" for everyone invloved.

"My family and I would like to thank you all for your prayers and well wishes," Tina Marie said.

"It is impossible to reach back to you all individually but know your messages have been heard.

"At this time we ask for everyone to please respect our privacy and keep the victims of this accident and my father in your prayers."

A family notice said that the nurse was a loving mother to Brendan and Christopher and partner of Jose.

One witness to the crash told NBC News they heard a "big roar" before pier crash on Sunday.

They added: "[It was] like a tractor-trailer was coming down the block at full speed and they hit something.

"Jet skiers were at the scene first, they jumped in, took two people out... it was a bad scene, a bad situation."

It is understood that a number of police and fire responders rescued the two survivors on Sunday afternoon local time.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro told a new conference that the "plane was travelling rather fast along the water" before it "skipped twice and hit the pier" while trying to land.
