Tributes to British soldier, 20, whose body was discovered in wooded area in Peterlee

The comrades of a young British soldier who died suddenly while at home in County Durham have paid tribute to him.

Ben Healy was found dead in a wooded area in Peterlee early on January 26.

His body was discovered when police officers were called to fields behind Olaman Walk in the town.

The 20-year-old's death is not being treated as suspicious.

It has since been revealed that Ben was a soldier and part of the Light Dragoons cavalry regiment, which is based in Catterick Garrison.

The Light Dragoons posted a tribute on Facebook to Ben which read: "It is with great sadness that we must announce that Trooper Ben Healy died suddenly in the early hours of Sunday morning, 26th Jan.

"Our deepest sympathies go to his parents and family at this difficult time.

"Tpr Healy will be greatly missed by all members of C Squadron and the Regiment."

A number of tributes were also left on the Light Dragoons social media page.

Christopher Homewood said: "So sad to hear this tragic news, my heart and thoughts go out to his friends, family and brothers in arms."

Wayne Hughes added: "R.I.P Ben, thinking of both regimental family and his personal friends and family."

Another message from Don Cutler read: "Very sad, much too young! R.I.P. Condolences to Ben's family and friends."

Soldiers in the Light Dragoons are mainly recruited from the north of England, earning them the nickname 'England’s northern cavalry.'

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "We can confirm police attended the sudden death of a 20-year-old man in a wooded area near to Olaman Walk, Peterlee at around 8am on Sunday January 26.

"The death is being treated as non-suspicious."
