Tributes to boy, 18, knocked down by BMW and killed as he crossed main road

A young man has died after he was struck by a BMW while crossing a main road near York.

George Sawyer, an 18-year-old from Farnley Tyas in West Yorks, died after he was hit by the black BMW on the eastbound carriageway of the A64 between Tadcaster and Askham Bryan in the early hours of Monday.

North Yorkshire Police said the teen died at the scene.

The male driver of the BMW was assisting police with their investigation, the BBC reports.

A spokesperson for the police force said the affected section of the road was reopened shortly after 8pm.

Police were appealing for anyone who may have seen George or the black BMW prior to the collision, which occurred around 1.20am, to get in touch.

Another wrote: "So very sorry for your loss, my condolences to family and friends at this very sad time. RIP GEORGE."
