Tributes to boy, 16, knifed to death by 'laughing' mob in north London

Alex Smith was stabbed to death in Camden while pleading for help

Tributes were paid to a 16-year-old boy chased and stabbed to death with a machete by three laughing killers near Regent’s Park.

Alex Smith desperately banged on doors begging for help after the attack but was turned away by terrified locals in Munster Square, Camden, at 11pm on Monday.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Healy, leading the murder hunt, said the suspects made off in a vehicle which was discovered burnt out nearby. A second vehicle believed to be involved in the incident was also found burnt out some distance away.

Friends today said Arsenal supporter Alex had gone to school in Tufnell Park and was a popular young man.

Police and ambulance at the scene of the stabbing

One told the Standard: “He was a funny guy who we all loved and we can’t believe he’s gone. He was taken too soon and he had such a bright future ahead of him.”

A floral memorial with pictures of Alex and balloons has been set up overnight.

One message read: “To my darling baby brother I wish it was all a dream. Love you with all my heart.”

DCI Healy added: “We have a dedicated team working relentlessly to track down those responsible. We’re reviewing CCTV, knocking on doors and completing other enquiries to build a clear picture of the events.”
