Tributes to "big-hearted" West Lothian dad after death from covid

Tributes have been paid to a “big-hearted” West Lothian darts star, who represented his country at a World Cup, after his tragic death from covid.

Wullie Wilson, nicknamed by friends ‘Madhoose’ by pals, has been described as a “popular, happy-go-lucky” father and husband, reports Edinburgh Live.

The talented darts player had been instrumental in setting up the country’s disability darts squad, which hosted the world championships in Whitburn in September.

Wullie, who represented the Scottish side, sadly took ill shortly after the conclusion of the tournament.

West Lothian disability darts treasurer Joanne Gallacher says his death has come as a shock to his devastated teammates.

Joanne, 43, described the darts star as a “really special bloke" with a boisterous personality that made him a popular member of the squad.

She said: “He’d pick anybody up who needed a lift, he was just the type of guy who wouldn’t think twice about travelling 20 or 30 miles to drive someone home from a darts match.

“Wullie was just a lovely bloke. When we had the world cup at the start of September, we had a team over from Germany and they were some of the first to donate to the fundraiser for his family.

“They had only met him once but he’d made such an instant impression with them, it just shows how likeable he was.”

Joanne revealed that he gained his nickname 'Madhoose' after getting a reputation for going for the ‘hardest possible shots'.

Reflecting on his death, she said: “It was so quick, he was playing and representing Scotland at the start of September but he just got ill so quickly after that.

“It has been really difficult for a lot of the players to get their head around."

Teams from across the central belt are expected to take part in the open tournament at the British Legion hall in Bathgate this Sunday, October 17, to honour Wullie’s memory.

A fundraiser has also been set up for his family here.
