Tributes to 'beautiful soul' Jenna Latham who tragically fell to her death ten years ago

Friends and relatives of an aspiring actress have paid an emotional tribute to her ten years after her tragic death.

Jenna Latham was just 21-years-old when she fell to her death from the balcony of her home in St Peter's Basin, Newcastle.

Her mum Lynne tried in vain to help her daughter after she climbed over the railing on September 9, 2011, but despite her efforts she could only look on helplessly as Jenna fell.

Marking the tenth anniversary of Jenna's death, Lynne joined Jenna's friends at St Peter's Basin to release balloons and leave floral tributes.

Describing her daughter and the effect her death had on her, Lynne said: "She was an absolutely beautiful soul, full of life. She had more energy in her than any girl I know, she was beautiful.

"She just used to bounce around with an infectious smile. Everybody loved Jenna. She was so loved, a lovely happy girl who was the life and soul of the party.

"I shuffled calmly to the window, and when I got within touching distance I reached out for her hand, I reached out for my baby.

"She was smirking and she moved her hand, but then her footing went and she fell backwards.

"I have to live with that, I've had to live with that sound in my head for all these years.

"I could've died. That would have been the easier way, but I had another daughter and a granddaughter so I couldn't. How I'm alive I do not know."

Jenna's death was the second major tragedy Lynne has experienced, after her mother May was murdered by her dad David Brown in 1983, when Lynne was just 15.

At the time of Jenna's death, questions were raised about the actions of police officers - she had been arrested earlier that same day for being drunk and disorderly, and was held in Byker police station for five hours.

During that time she made numerous threats to harm herself, including attempting to tie a jumper round her neck and also wrapping her hair around her throat.

Just hours after her release, Jenna was dead.

At at the inquest into her death, questions arose as to why the officer running the custody suite on that day didn't call a force medical officer to come and asses her - something which was part of Home Office and Northumbria Police guidelines.

An IPCC investigation later recommended that the officer should face a misconduct meeting. The IPCC Commissioner for Northumbria at the time, Cindy Butts said "more should have been done at Byker police station to help someone who was in a vulnerable state of mind.

However, coroner David Mitford, returning a verdict of misadventure, "rejected" claims police were responsible for her death, and said he was not satisfied the treatment Jenna received in custody or the actions of officers on the scene following the fall could be classed as contributing to her death.

Lynne says she still has unanswered questions about the night Jenna died, and has urged anyone who may have witnessed her death to come forward.

She maintains her daughter did not intend to harm herself.

Lynne said: "I would like to appeal for any witnesses, anybody who might have seen something that day. I still have unanswered questions.

"Jenna slipped. She was sad, but I think climbing out was a cry for help."
