Tributes to a 'legend' left at the scene where man was killed in city crash

Tributes to a "legend' were left at the scene of a horrific city crash where a man was tragically killed.

Emergency services were called to the junction of Breck Road and Belmont Road, in Anfield, in the early hours of Wednesday morning after two cars were involved in a collision.

A red Vauxhall Corsa and a blue BMW 530 were involved in the smash outside the Paisley Gates pub at around 5.30am.

The red Corsa was later photographed on the footpath outside the pub after fire crews had removed the roof of the car to free those inside.

Significant damage was also caused to the front of the BMW but it is not believed that anyone in that car had been injured.

The driver and backseat passenger in the Corsa were rushed to hospital after the crash but the man riding in the back of the car died from his injuries a short time later.

Stunning floral tributes have since been left at scene for the man who has been described as a legend by loved ones.

One message, attached to a bunch of flowers that were tapped to a lamppost, read: "Andy you legend, love you always."

Messages of support and tributes were also posted on social media to the man.

On Facebook, Annemarie Calvert said: "So heartbreaking.

"Rest in Peace and our sincerest condolences to all his family."

Betty Williams also said: "So sad thinking of the family at this sad time."

Many people from the area also commented on how notoriously dangerous the junction can be at times.

Steve Lee said: "Horrendous junction that. Narrow with a bad road surface, terrible sight lines and loads of distractions.

"Surprised this doesn't happen more often."

Tracey Rooney-Lloyd also said: "This is very sad. I am surprised there is not more accidents there. I try to avoid there."

Road closures were put in place at the time of crash as police continue to appeal for witness to come forward to help with their investigation.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We are investigating following a fatal road traffic collision on Wednesday, May 27.

"At around 5.30am, emergency services were called to Belmont Road at its junction with Breck Road to reports of a collision involving a red Vauxhall Corsa and a blue BMW 530. Traffic lights were also damaged during the collision.

"Two men - the driver and rear passenger in the Corsa - were taken to hospital for treatment.

"Sadly, the passenger was pronounced deceased a short time later.

"The man's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

"The driver of the Corsa, a man in his 60s, remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

"We would ask anyone who witnessed the collision to call our Roads Policing Unit on (0151) 7775747 or pass information on Twitter via @MerPolCC."
