Tributes to 12-year-old Cork 'princess' Abbey McGeough after sad passing

Tributes have been paid to a 12-year-old Cork girl who sadly died after a long battle with cerebral palsy.

Abbey McGeough, from Blarney, passed away on Saturday in the loving care of those at Cork University Hospital.

The brave child had been critically ill in hospital for the past week with local emergency services sending their thoughts and prayers to her and her family via social media in a #lightupforabi initiative.

Online prayers and services had been held for the a 5th class pupil in Rathpeacon as her local community wished her a full recovery.

Sadly on Sunday morning, ambulance paramedic Ger O'Dea announced on behalf of the family that Abi had passed away.

Mr O'Dea said on Twitter: "It is with a very heavy heart that I write this post on behalf of Abi's mom Leslianne, her grandparents Phil and Abina , aunts, uncles, family to bring the heartbreaking news that their wonderful princess has gotten her wings today and joined the angels in heaven.

"She lit up so many rooms with her smile and touched so many people with her journey so may she now rest in peace and shine her light on all those who will miss her dearly.

"Sincere thanks to all who lit it up for Abi and brought support and comfort to her family while she was in hospital."

Abi, as she was commonly known, was first diagnosed with cerebral palsy in 2009 and had battled bravely since.

Her family ran a number of fundraisers in recent years to fund the medical procedures she needed.

The funeral of the Cork girl will take place at a later date but will be family only due to current Government restrictions.
