Tributes pour in for Eddie Wallace as League of Ireland stalwart passes away

Tributes have been paid to League of Ireland stalwart Eddie Wallace who passed away today following a recent illness.

Wallace was heavily involved in Irish football for over 40 years as a player and coach, and boasted an impressive track record working with and identifying young players.

He was appointed manager of Athlone Town in 2014 when Keith Long - who he had been assistant to - left the club to join Bohemians.

Wallace also had roles with Bray Wanderers, Bohemians, St. Patrick’s Athletic, Shamrock Rovers, UCD and Cabinteely, where he was made Head of Recruitment in 2017.

“The FAI expresses its sympathies with the family & friends of Eddie Wallace following his passing,” said a spokesman for the association.

“A highly-respected manager and coach, Eddie had a long association with the League of Ireland.”

Shamrock Rovers defender Roberto Lopes tweeted: “Shocked and saddened by the news.

“Helped me and others massively in starting a career in LOI. A true football man and above all an absolute gentleman.”

Recently retired League of Ireland player Conan Byrne said: “This is so sad. Eddie was an incredible man full of wit and humour.

“He put his arm around me several times when I needed it in those early years at UCD and I never forgot it. Condolences to all of his family.”

Will Clarke, the League of Ireland’s Academy Development manager, said: “Irish football lost one of the best today.

“Eddie was a great character who dedicated his life to football & he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

“Thanks to those who contacted him in recent weeks - it gave him great comfort in his final days. Rest in Peace Ed.”

Former League of Ireland player Paddy Kavanagh said: “Terrible news. Helped me find my way in the league at UCD. An absolute gent of a man.”

John Gill, the ex-Dundalk manager and assistant manager, said: “Just lost a great friend today. Eddie Wallace, a great football man and even better person.

“The amount of young players he brought into the league was staggering. Heartbreaking news, RIP Eddie and hopefully see you on the other side.”

And Bray Wanderers tweeted: “Everyone at the club is saddened by the passing of Eddie Wallace this afternoon.

“Eddie was Pat Devlin's assistant when Bray Wanderers entered the league in 1985. He was involved with Cabinteely until his recent illness.

“Our condolences go out to his family and friends.”
