Baroness Trumpington 'V sign video': Tributes pour in to 'legend' as viewers hail clip of her swearing at Lord King

Tributes: Baroness Trumpington flips a v-sign in the House of Lords

Tributes have flooded in for 'Legend of the Lords' Baroness Trumpington, who passed away aged 96.

She was hailed by TV viewers in 2011 after she made a V-sign at Tory Lord King, a former defence secretary, after he made a jibe about her age.

The video went viral again today after the Baroness, who retired last year, passed away in her sleep last night.

Her appearance on the BBC panel show Have I Got News For You led to calls for her to have her own series.

The former Tory minister and government whip also drew attention for her comments on former Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Eric Pickles when she appeared on HIGNFY.

She said: "I have heard of him, I didn't realise he was that large."

The 'trailblazer' also drew controversy for her comments about growing old disgracefully, smoking and suggesting that the military used sheep to detonate mines during the Falklands War.

In her defence, she said: "My point was that you can put a sheep out of its misery and eat it. You can't do that to a man."

Former Prime Minister David Cameron paid tribute to the Baroness on Twitter.

He said: "So very sad to hear that Baroness Trumpington has passed away.

"She was one of a kind - they simply don’t make politicians like that anymore.

"She will be sorely missed in Westminster but long remembered for her outstanding ability and great humour. RIP Trumpers."

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt added: "Deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved this incredible woman.

"Socialite, mother, Bletchley Park code breaker, Baroness, Minister, trailblazer, heroine and an utter joy.

"Thank you Jean Barker, Baroness Trumpington."

In World War Two, the Baroness worked in naval intelligence at Bletchley Park, before entering politics as a councillor in Cambridge, where she later became mayor.

Ater entering government in 1980, she served under prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major, working in the Department of Health and Ministry of Agriculture.

Others who paid tribute to the iconic Peer included Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, who praised a "huge inspiration", and said: "She always had time to deliver a good telling off, give advice or pay a compliment.

"I had the privilege of being at the receiving end of all three!"

Conservative Deputy Chairman James Cleverly added: "So sad to hear that code breaking, two finger wagging, Baroness Trumpington has passed away. Ma'am, we salute you."

Lady Trumpington was born Jean Alys Campbell-Harris on October 23, 1922 and educated privately in England and France.

During the war she was a land girl at former PM David Lloyd George's farm in Churt, Surrey, before working at Bletchley.
