Tributes pour in for 'truly gentle soul' who died after neighbour bust up in Inverness

Tributes are pouring in for a 'truly gentle soul' who died following a bust up with a neighbour in Inverness.

We told how John Birrell, of Blackpark House, passed away following the 'altercation' on August 17.

A 65-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Devastated locals have paid tribute to the 55-year-old garage owner who was described as an 'incredibly kind and helpful man'.

One wrote on social media: "John was a true, honest gentleman.

"I always loved my chats with him when I went in with my car."

Another added: "RIP John.

"An incredibly kind and helpful man."

A third commented: "Inverness lost a lovely man in John Birrell.

"He was very good to my wife and I."

Another wrote: "So very sad to hear this.

"John was a truly gentle soul."

The arrested man is understood to be a retired eye surgeon from the London area.

Neighbours said he and his wife were originally from Aberdeenshire.

A police spokeswoman said: “Around 6pm on August 17, police were called to Blackpark, Inverness, following a report of an altercation between two men.

“Emergency services attended and a 55-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The man who died can now be named as John Birrell and his relatives are aware.

“A post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course to establish the exact cause of death."
