A Midlothian man described as "one of life's true gentleman" has sadly passed away - he's believed to have contracted COVID-19.
Tributes poured in for PC Tom Tait, who was well-known for his role as a community police officer.
Penicuik Rugby Club confirmed that the man known as "Big" Tom Tait, passed away in the early afternoon of Friday 3 April.
One well-wisher, who drew a sketch of Mr Tait, wrote: "I was...moved and saddened to read of the passing of PC Tom Tait due to the current virus just yesterday."
Another said: "A very sad announcement . Former Loanhead Community Policeman, Tom Tait passed away on Friday 3 April in hospital, having been admitted with COVID- 19 virus."
Penicuik Rugby Club, where Mr. Tait was a former club stalwart said: "It is with deep sadness that we note the passing of former club stalwart “Big” Tom Tait in the early afternoon of Friday 3rd April.
"Tom was a big man in many ways and was always happy to chat and share an opinion or two when we saw him in the club house.
"Our thoughts are with Joan, Stuart and Louise and their families and loved ones at this hugely difficult time.
"Another one gone too soon. #weArePenicuik."
Tributes poured in for the much-loved local policeman who was described as a "lovely person"
One local said: "Such sad news, he was a lovely man always stopping to chat, will miss his cheery face on our street. Thinking of all his family at this very sad time."
Another wrote: "Sorry to hear about Tommy, he was a lifetime friend and a great personality and will be missed by a great deal of people. A local legend."
While another person from Loanhead added "So sad, he was one of the nicest people I had the pleasure of knowing. Thoughts are with the family, may they find the strength to get through this difficult time."
